Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter (no xylitol)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup water or low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Important: Always use peanut butter without xylitol, as this artificial sweetener is toxic to dogs. Check ingredient labels carefully.

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat and Prepare

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.

While the oven heats, gather all your ingredients. Having everything ready before you start mixing will make the process smoother. For best results, ensure your peanut butter is at room temperature for easier mixing.

Step 2: Mix Wet Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the peanut butter, eggs, water (or chicken broth), and olive oil. Use a whisk or fork to blend until smooth and well-combined.

The mixture should be creamy and uniform. If using chicken broth instead of water, it will add extra flavor that dogs love. Make sure the broth is low-sodium and doesn't contain onions or garlic, which are toxic to dogs.

Step 3: Add Dry Ingredients

Gradually add the whole wheat flour to the wet mixture, stirring continuously. Mix until a firm dough forms. The dough should be slightly sticky but manageable.

If the dough is too dry, add a tablespoon of water at a time. If it's too sticky, add a bit more flour. The consistency should allow you to roll it out without it sticking excessively to your hands or the rolling surface.

Step 4: Roll and Cut

On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to approximately 1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to create fun shapes, or simply cut into squares or rectangles with a knife.

Smaller shapes work well for training treats, while larger shapes are perfect for longer-lasting chews. If you don't have cookie cutters, a pizza cutter works great for creating uniform squares or rectangles.

Step 5: Bake

Place the cut biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1/2 inch between each. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the biscuits are firm.

For crunchier treats, bake an additional 5 minutes. For softer treats, reduce baking time by 3-5 minutes. The biscuits should be firm to the touch but not rock-hard when done.

Step 6: Cool and Store

Remove from oven and allow biscuits to cool completely on the baking sheet before storing. This ensures they reach their final texture and prevents moisture buildup.

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks, or refrigerate for up to 4 weeks. For longer storage, freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. For more information on proper storage, see our Storage and Preservation Methods guide.

Tips & Variations

Texture Variations

For softer treats, reduce baking time by 5 minutes. For extra crunchy treats, bake 5-10 minutes longer. You can also experiment with thickness - thinner biscuits will be crispier, while thicker ones will be chewier.

Flavor Enhancements

Add 1/4 cup of pureed pumpkin or sweet potato for extra flavor and fiber. You can also incorporate a tablespoon of ground flaxseed for omega-3 benefits. For dogs who love variety, try adding a small amount of shredded carrot or apple.

Allergy-Friendly Alternatives

If your dog is allergic to wheat, substitute with coconut flour or chickpea flour. For peanut allergies, use almond butter or sunflower seed butter instead. Always introduce new ingredients gradually and monitor for reactions. Learn more about safe ingredient substitutions in our Essential Ingredients Guide.

Training Treat Size

For training purposes, cut treats into very small pieces (about 1/4 inch). This allows you to give multiple rewards without overfeeding. Small pieces are also easier for puppies or small dogs to handle.
